Painting - My passion

Who am I?

I am passionate about drawing and painting.

  • I never get tired when I am painting. My wife has told me several times to rest. For me, I am resting when I am painting. I always find time to paint. I feel that it helps me to be more creative at other aspects of my life as well. I can sacrifice sleep, I can miss out on a good movie, I can continue without eating or drinking, I visit art galleries and art exhibitions. I spend hours researching on painting techniques and then practicing them. Each painting is unique to me as it is an outcome of certain emotions behind it. People who see the paintings are sometimes appreciative, sometimes critical and sometimes indifferent. None of the reactions bother me; I pick what I value, as I am on my own journey, not on someone else’s.

Other interests:

  • I also like traveling, photography, listening to music and reading.

Formal qualifications:

  • I am a self-trained artist. I have painted on and off for several years while at work, but been painting excessively for the last few years.

Why do I paint?

I started drawing when I was a kid, but never took it seriously. In the last few years I started drawing and painting regularly. It has helped me in multiple ways. Sharing a few themes below:

  • Slowing down, taking a break: Several years back when I picked up the canvas to start a painting I faced the rush of anxiety. I still have that feeling but now I take it more positively.
  • I am not a professional artist: I had to remind myself to enjoy the process of drawing / painting and not to be a perfectionist or be under pressure to get that ‘perfect’ piece of art.
  • Being optimistic: Most of the times the work in progress drawing / painting didn’t look good, or something would go wrong during the process: I realised that what is more important is to have the end goal in mind and use that to overcome minor setbacks in the process.
  • Being resilient, & comfortable to change: For some of my drawings / paintings, I realized that making a change to the original plan brought a more satisfying output.
  • Drawing / painting helped me understand my choices: It helped me understand my choices of colour schemes, subjects that I chose, composition, and medium, to name a few.
  • Satisfaction: It gave me the satisfaction of creating something (new) literally from scratch.
  • Learn new techniques: I was learning for two reasons – firstly, to overcome obstacles - when I didn’t know how to do something (like drawing clouds or waves). Secondly, when I wanted to try out something new (did my first relief painting a couple years back, tried the pour technique last year).
  • Lastly (but not the least!), drawing / painting helped me bond with my mother and engage her in drawing too (as one of the suggestions for her Alzheimer's).
